What is a Celebrant?

It’s a question I hear often: “What exactly is a celebrant?” and it’s one I love answering.

A celebrant is someone who creates and leads personalised ceremonies. These might be funerals, memorials, celebration of life events, weddings, naming ceremonies or another of life’s milestones. Unlike religious officiants or registrars, celebrants aren’t bound by legal or spiritual frameworks, which means every ceremony can be tailored to reflect the people at its heart.

We write the words, shape the structure and guide the tone. We listen intently to your stories, values and wishes and then craft something unique, something that feels true to you.

So what does that actually look like?
For a wedding, it might mean writing vows that reflect your journey, choosing readings that speak to your love or creating rituals that feel authentic.

For a naming ceremony, it’s about welcoming a new life or transition with joy and intention, celebrating family, identity and belonging.

For a funeral celebrant, like myself, it means honouring a life with sensitivity and care.
