For Your Tomorrow – A People’s Tribute

For Your Tomorrow – A People’s Tribute

This month I was fortunate to visit the Royal Armouries at Fort Nelson, Portsmouth, which is currently home to a remarkable remembrance tribute. For Your Tomorrow, is an art installation created by the charity Standing With Giants. From October until January, the historic fort is filled with 1,475 life-sized silhouettes representing British servicemen who gave their lives on D-Day, alongside 50 French resistance fighters.

A Place of Reflection
It’s an extraordinary scene. Walking among the silhouettes is a powerful experience – a feeling of camaraderie and vulnerability, each figure a stark reminder of courage and sacrifice. Hundreds of people have already visited to pay their respects and Fort Nelson, which overlooks Portsmouth and was the embarkation point for Allied troops in 1944, is a fitting setting. Its ramparts and panoramic views invite contemplation and the atmosphere is both solemn and uplifting.

Why It Matters
The installation creates a space where remembrance becomes both personal and shared. It shows us that honouring those who served is not limited to anniversaries or historic dates and that grief and gratitude walk hand in hand. Standing among the silhouettes, you feel the weight of absence, the strength of unity and respect and a sense of duty to carry forward the stories of all servicemen and women who fight for our freedoms, both past and present.

Engaging with the installation
It was lovely to observe visitors creating their own acts of remembrance: Pausing beside a silhouette and talking about the stories (letters home are particularly emotional), taking photographs and sharing memories with children to keep history alive. Perhaps some, like me, felt compelled to write a short reflection afterwards? These acts, like acts in grief, can help to connect the past with the present and provide an opportunity for conversations about death and love.

Continuing the Legacy
The installation, which is part of a wider mission by Standing With Giants to create large-scale art that honours service, invites communities to reflect and grieve together. I found myself reflecting on the traditions of military funerals – from the sounding of the Last Post to the folding of the Union Flag and the giving and receiving of the ultimate gift… They gave their tomorrow for our today, so let’s enjoy it and continue the legacy of striving to leave behind something better!

Here to help
If you would like a farewell ceremony that is special, that’s what I do. I don’t rush. I don’t use templates. I take time to understand. Ceremonies don’t need to be loud or showy to be powerful. They can be gentle, intentional and beautiful – it’s the inspiration behind the name of my business and blog and what I do best.
